Except for the itch of small beetles burrowing into your branches, life is good. But alas, a nearby volcano erupts. Then comes the deluge and mudslide. Sadly, you and the rest of the forest are pretty much toast. But all is not lost, because within the events of your destruction are sown the seeds of your immortality: without the volcano, flood, and watery burial, no sign of you or your fellows would exist over 225 million years later for us to marvel over. This scene has played out uncounted thousands of times all over the planet, throughout the course of geologic time.
