FOR ANYONE WHO WORKS WITH colored stones, the most coveted prize in the jewelry field is the AGTA Spectrum Award. The American Gem Trade Association received some 400 entries this year, all made with top-notch, often unique gem material and many awe-inspiring designs and metalwork. What does it take to win a Spectrum Award? I'll get to that, but first let me point out you don't necessarily have to place in this contest to benefit from the promotional value of it. You do need to enter something amazing - and photogenic. Not only does the AGTA photograph and post each entry online, along with the maker and description - I've found many designers this way - they also invite media to do the same.
