After successive marketing tweaks, Autodesk currently has two flavors of the software: 3ds Max 2009 and 3ds Max Design 2009. 3ds Max Design is primarily for design visualization, replacing Autodesk VIZ, and includes extra lighting analysis, but does not contain the software development kit (SDK) that allows you to develop in-house tools. Since a large percentage of design offices will never develop their own software tools, the lack of a SDK is a non-issue. If you are a current 3ds Max 2008 user, the upgrade to 2009 comes very quickly in the product life cycle; however, the upgrade includes signifi- cant performance enhancements and some interesting new features.
