摘要

Life in America does not get much more fabulous than it did for the billionaires Walter and Leonore Annenberg. Walter was born to fairly big media money and made it bigger by riding midcentury mass culture as the creator of TV Guide and Seventeen magazines. He put much of his money, supposedly $2 billion, back into culture; there were gifts of a huge impressionist collection to the Metropolitan Museum of Art, a new communications school at the University of Southern California, and $50 million to the United Negro College Fund. He and Leonore, who was known as Lee, had a lot of famous friends. Among them were Nancy and Ronald Reagan, whom they introduced to Margaret Thatcher and had as guests for many New Year's Eves, part of an ongoing parade of celebrities, titans, and royals. They entertained eagerly and would gather their friends at Sunnylands, their 200-acre estate in the arid playground of Rancho Mirage, California, near Palm Springs, at the intersection of Bob Hope and Frank Sinatra Drives.
