Stormwater Basin Naturalization and Conversion

Project History-Rapid residential and commercial development throughout the western suburbs of Chicago throughout the early and mid 20th Century has resulted in a proliferation of small to mid-sized ponds and detention basins. Many of these ponds were initially constructed in low- lying areas or in areas where intermittent streams and wetlands once dotted the landscape. One such pond was the Valley View Pond in Downers Grove, Illinois. Initially constructed as part of a residential development in a low lying area in-line with an intermittent tributary stream in the 1950s, urbanization and accelerated runoff had continued to cause significant degradation of the pond and shorelines since the 1990s.
