Afterwards, all sorts of expensive protective measures were implemented to protect you against that process.' In terms of knowledge, the Netherlands has now built up a considerable international reputation, thanks in part to the development of the Inset Toolkit, a methodology for safe design. 'It's a sort of step-by-step plan that keeps an eye on each stage of a production process during the design', says Versloot. 'It means you're already checking for safety. A simple example: you start with a list of chemicals. The first question is 'Do I really need all this stuff?' Or is there an alternative that's not flammable? Can water be used instead of oil? That sort of basic thing prevents you from being lumbered with hundreds of questions about solutions for the dangers afterwards.'
