People and ponds: the participatory role of humans in Integrated Lake Basin Management

This issue focuses on the central role of people, most notably the role of stakeholder participation, and particularly within the integrated lake basin management (ILBM) governance framework (Fig. 1; RCSE-Shiga University and ILEC 2011). The reports presented herein were originally presented at the ILEC-sponsored 14th World Lake Conference, held in Austin, Texas (USA) in 2011, or the 32nd North American Lake Management Society International Symposium, held in Madison, Wisconsin (USA) in 2012. Both events provided a platform for presentation of the ILBM framework and for discussions focusing on the concept of lake governance central to this framework.
