For Vodafone, the 1990s was all about growth. Explosive, unprecedented growth as the mobile phone market took off and the company moved to become the dominant player in the consumer arena. Vodafone estimates that since 1985, it has signed up the equivalent of 10,650 people per day. But if that period of landgrab was momentous, then today's mission of consolidation, at least in the UK where the market has become saturated, is equally important. How Vodafone has responded to the challenge is a lesson to any fast-moving business. It has embarked on a major business excellence initiative which culminated in it recently becoming the first major telecommunications company to upgrade its quality management system to the ISO 9000:2000 registration, across its UK and Northern Ireland operations.
