LA illegal garment factory clampdown

US - Investigators with the Economic and Employment Enforcement Coalition (EEEC) have targeted garment industry businesses operating illegally in Los Angeles County. EEEC investigators visited 21 garment manufacturers, discovering safety breaches at all of them, while 18 had violated Californian labour laws. Thirty-five citations were issued, totalling $163,200. EEEC director David Dorame said: "Our effort is to root out California's underground economy by targeting businesses that avoid labour, tax and licensing laws, safety and health regulations and carry no workers' compensation insurance. "By targeting enforcement against illegal operators, we help level the playing field for law abiding businesses and their employees."
