Karl Mayer develops PVA-coated tricot shoe fabric

Karl Mayer, warp knitting machinery company, has developed a semi-rigid shoe fabric, featuring flexibility for comfort and durability for long-term use. The textile is developed from a tricot fabric combined with a polyvinyl acetate (PVA) coating. According to the company, shoe fabrics have to pander to a lot of demands - they must withstand wind, weather and high mechanical stresses, while also being pliable, breathable and they must look good. The warp knitting sector has been able to extend the range of shoe fabrics available, helping them meet some of the necessary requirements, Karl Mayer said. The PVA coating is an alternative to conventional methods of making the material stiffer, like heat-setting or the application of acrylate dispersion in water. PVA coating is amorphous, odourless and tasteless, which offers increased stiffness and dimensional stability of the warp knit, without having any great effect on its textile characteristics, the company said.
