It is a popular enough temptation for any PhD candidate to believe that his or her doctoral thesis should be readily capable of publication as a book in its own right. The simple truth, however, is that a thesis rarely makes a happy transition to a book, despite the optimism (or, sometimes, obsession) of the author for that prospect. Even if the thesis does make it to being a book, it will usually be somewhat dull and processional. This book by Dr. Olsen is happily a notable exception in every respect.
