Cope, Mitre and Stole for Archbishop Rowan Williams

In October 2002 Wendy and I were commissioned to weave the silk and make up the Enthronement Cope, Mitre and Stole for Dr. Rowan Williams, to be worn when he was enthroned Archbishop of Canterbury in February, 2003. We first made a cope and mitre for Dr. Williams when he was Bishop of Monmouth in 1998 and we were delighted to be asked to submit designs for his enthronement vestments. After initial discussions with Fr. Gregory Cameron and Dr. Rowan Williams we decided on a dark gold silk with paler gold mitre and stole, the cope to have a woven braid, or orphrey, decoration incorporating a Celtic cross pattern enhanced with knot work in real gold thread.
