Tapestries in Cornwall

This article has been written to describe some of the woven tapestries that are to be found in Cornwall. A tapestry typically depicts scenes of mythological influence, or is derived from classical literature, particularly Latin or Greek; yet Cornwall is of Celtic influence. A story is told within a tapestry, be it of a hunt or a love scene; a social document of a time when newspapers were not in existence. They are mostly displayed in stately homes, but there are several modern ones which can be found in churches. Godolphin House, near Helston houses a large tapestry that was woven at the Mortlake factory (West London), in about 1720. It had been on display in the Withdrawing Room, but since 2003, following renovation and restoration of the house, it now hangs in the Godolphin Room.
