It is a very long way from Devon to Norwich, but I was very glad to have made the trip to see the National Exhibition. The Cathedral Close proved a beautiful setting, although a little difficult to navigate around. It seemed a pity that there was little publicity for the exhibition on site to attract in people who were passing through. Nevertheless, the exhibition was well attended while I was there, with the stewards kept very busy answering visitors' questions (with unfailing good humour and a great deal of knowledge). The selectors had brought together a very comprehensive collection of work which was displayed to great effect. The overall impression was of light and colour, but the yarn which formed the basis of it all somehow made it more approachable. Delicate lacy shawls, fine tailored jackets, substantial rugs, patterned scarves and colourful braids and yarns all vied for attention. There were practical items like socks, and there were tapestries and textile art to contemplate. With the second exhibition space in Norwich School crypt providing a complete contrast, it was not easy to see how this could be summed up in a short review piece!
