We know Burma as Myanmar today. The ruling regime is keen for the world to know it as such. Bordering with China, India, Bangladesh, Laos and Thailand, and with 135 distinct ethnic groups, the fabrics seen in costumes worn by these peoples vary considerably. About three-quarters of the population farm, so much of life revolves round the village. Spinning, weaving and dyeing is much in evidence and not difficult to find. Most tourists are guided through areas which can cope with groups. It is possible to travel independently but overnight accommodation, even for two, can be a problem as the tourist infrastructure is still limited.
