Fleece to Blanket Challenge

Ceredigion's Fleece to Garment challenge coincided with one of the hottest days of last summer. The objective for each team was to prepare fleece for spinning (making rolags or woolcombing), spin two singles, then ply them together to make a double knitting weight yarn and either knit, crochet or weave four 6 inch squares. Six recently-sheared Llanwenog ram fleeces from a well-known local breeder were washed by four Guild members. One of the fleeces was long enough for combing (4 inch staple), three were medium staple length, suitable for combing or rolags, and the final two were generally very short staple (around 1 in). The differences between the fleeces meant that we had some variety to work with and suggested a short draw team and a long draw team.
