This is the first book that I have seen in the Storey Basics series, and it is just that. No frills. Small format, simple line drawings. No projects section. Nothing glossy about it at all. It is about the clearest description of how to learn to crochet that I have come across. I actually find the line drawings easier to 'read' than photographs might be. The text is clear, with a reasonably large typeface. You really could teach yourself to crochet from this without having to make a huge investment in something you might end up not liking.
