The rigid heddle loom is deservedly popular -relatively inexpensive, portable and quick to warp up. Judith Shangold explores its versatility to very good effect in this innovative book. Using colour and weave techniques in particular, she adopts a simple concept - designing garments around simple rectangular sections of woven cloth and then providing shaping by adding panels, sleeves, gussets and trims using various straightforward knitting techniques. Instead of weaving yardage, pinning on a paper pattern and cutting the yardage into the garment sections, lengths of fabric exactly matching the required garment pieces are woven. During the making up process knitted sections are added where relevant. By using the same yarns for weaving and knitting, beautifully co-ordinated garments can be created.
