Weavers who use their handspun yarns can achieve quite different effects with the same weave structure by deciding whether to dye fibres before or after spinning. In the first sample, I space-dyed tussah silk tops using acid dye stock solutions (steamed to fix) and then spun the tops, with each section split several times lengthwise so that I obtained frequent colour changes within the singles. When these were plied together, they resulted in various marls and solid colours, all in very short lengths. Next I spun undyed tussah tops and space-dyed the two-ply skein in the same way that I had dyed the unspun fibres (using different colours).
