This delightful self-published book takes us on a journey along two paths, where an experienced dyer shares her own beginnings as she introduces the joy of natural dyeing and establishing a dye garden in a harsh Shetland climate. The book is divided into sections for extracting dye from different parts of plants and when it is useful to do so, to obtain many different shades and colours. Once the basic methods are understood, there is a project for 12 colours from onion skins which is an excellent introduction to the range of colour that can be produced from just one dyestuff using modifiers. While the book emphasises general health and safety elements, it could include more precautions for the safe handling of modifiers, especially oxalic acid and the making of lye from wood ash, along with the regulations on collecting plants from the wild.
