This is the publication of a series of lectures and experiments from some of the conferences held by the European Textile Forum. The Forum is a conference and series of workshops about historical textile techniques, with a strong focus on the craft aspects and practical work. The book gives an insight into the wide variety of topics covered, discussed and explored. The Forum was originally developed around a large-scale spinning experiment that took place during the inaugural conference in 2009. Scholars, crafters and researchers from across Europe and around the world have come together to discuss, question and research historical textiles both in theory and in practice. Each has a new approach, exploring a question of textile manufacture in a scientific way, revealing answers and outcomes that were previously unavailable. The book is an eclectic mix of topics, starting with the terminology of non-woven textile structures and techniques, and includes the identification of weaving tablets during excavation, the supply of water to dyeing workshops in Pompeii, and even Roman leather 'tanga briefs'. Anyone who is interested in the history of textiles will find the book fascinating.
