Pattern and Loom: A Practical Study of the Development of Weaving Techniques in China, Western Asia and Europe

This detailed book contains knowledge garnered from solid research and practical application, with hands-on weaving and loom adaptation. It covers warp-faced pattern weaving from the Chinese Han dynasty (206BCE-220CE); gauze weaving from the Han, Peru and Finnish (Karelian) traditions; weft-faced structures from Western Asia including Syria and Persia; the Mediterranean regions (including Beiderwand from Schleswig-Holstein); patterned doublecloth from Peru, Persia and Scandinavia; damasks from Syria, Italy, France, Flanders and Holland and, finally, damask, warp- and weft-faced compound twill fabrics from the Tang dynasty (617-907CE) in China. The book concludes with the physical loom attributes and adaptations that the different techniques demanded, from the simplest of looms with warp patterning rods through to the development of the Jacquard loom in 1804.
