For this exhibition Tapestry' was defined as a weft-faced fabric with discontinuous wefts; that is, the weft yarns don't run the full width of the fabric. Drawing on textiles from their own collection, the Whitworth created an exhibition to illustrate a range of weft-faced fabrics spanning several thousand years with fabrics from, amongst other places, Egypt, Peru, China and the UK. At the entrance was a nineteenth century French practice piece, exquisitely woven with very fine yarn in a painterly style.
