The tapestry world has lost one of its most important figures with the death at the end of October of Archie Brennan. Archie Brennan's personal work is a considerable body developed over a lifetime's exploration of the human face and form in tapestry. His style is very graphic, often monochrome, patterned, wryly humorous, always detached. Archie Brennan has done so much to raise the visibility of tapestry in his long career as both artist and teacher. Having trained as a weaver and an artist, he was at the vanguard of the fibre movement, yet he chose to make his cutting-edge art in the slow, technical medium of tapestry. His collaborations with artists during his time as Director of the Dovecot were ground-breaking, and paved the way to a more fruitful relationship between artist and studio weaver. His championing of small and miniature tapestries has changed our thinking about tapestry and scale. Most importantly, though, is his lifelong commitment to teaching, to passing on his formidable technical skills and his enthusiasm for the language of tapestry.
