Although not focused on our core crafts of weaving, spinning and dyeing, this well-illustrated book is worth studying as a collection of design how-to examples, working from observations of the natural world through to finished works of stitched and quilted textile art. The author takes a season-by-season approach to taking design inspiration from close personal observation of the landscapes around her home. The main part of the book is divided into chapters covering the four seasons, each subdivided into key elements with creative potential. She describes in detail her own observations from each seasonal walk, both visual and tactile, and her emotional responses, which encourages the reader to do likewise, accompanied by camera and sketchbook. Season by season the same scenery alters both subtly and dramatically, providing yet more inspiration by contrast. Her examples of working from photographs and sketch marks, through stitch samples, to finished pieces are particularly interesting and valuable as evidence of a step-by-step design process. The final chapter of the book usefully describes different ways of working and suggests further ideas.
