摘要

Anyone with an interest in textiles and their history will find this book fascinating. In her introduction the author reminds us that we are part of a tradition stretching back to ancient times, and that fabric is still an important part of our language, identity and society. We still talk about 'lives hanging by a thread', 'being interwoven' or 'being part of a social fabric'. Cloth is a part of our culture and remains important to the global economy. Although today we largely take fabric and cloth for granted, the author points out that the equipment used in its production pre-dates pottery and possibly agriculture. It remains at the centre of industrial and technological development.
