Women's roles in craft economies in India and Wales, and influences on creative practice, were examined by an exchange project involving artists from Wales and artisans from Kachchh in rural Gujarat, India. They shared studio time and field trips, producing work for this exhibition. Entering the gallery my eye was caught by the colours of India. These were four brilliantly coloured hangings, Life Colour I - IV 2018, by Rajiben M. Vankar, a young widow who turned to her family's weaving tradition to make a living. Her environmental principles inform her work. She leads a recycled plastic weaving initiative which employs local women and has developed ways of using discarded plastic bags, sweet wrappers and audio tape in weavings.
