DEVELOPING UKRAINE'S STANDARDS: 'SOURCES OF CENTRALIZED DRINKING WATER SUPPLY' AND 'DRINKING WATER'

The issue of supplying Ukraine's population with good-quality drinking water is one of the socially most significant issues since it directly affects the state of the health of citizens and in a cardinal way determines the degree of ecological and epidemiological safety of entire regions. The analysis of the state of drinking water supply for the population of the bulk of Ukraine's largest cities showed that the quality of drinking water and the level of its consumption still remain unsatisfactory and in a number of residential areas this issue has been verging on the brink of crisis. The following may be considered primary shortcomings in organization of drinking water supply for the population: 1. imperfection of the legislative framework and insufficiently effective control over the enforcement of regulatory and legal aspects of activities in the field of drinking water supply; 2. unsatisfactory sanitary and ecological state of surface sources of domestic-drinking water supply, insufficient use of underground water sources more protected from pollution; 3. use of imperfect technologies for water supply treatment facilities built in compliance with existing regulations. However, they at present are not capable to counteract penetration into drinking water of substances whose action on the human organism is becoming a real threat to health; 4. deteriorating state of water supply lines and facilities and violation of their operating conditions; 5. poor equipment for laboratory monitoring of drinking water quality at all stages of its input for the consumers; 6. unsatisfactory information to the population about quality parameters of water supplied and recommended methods and means of its add-on treatment.
