Creating Vibrant Public Spaces: Streetscape Design in Commercial and Historic Districts

Small towns "represent a history of investment of energy and materials in building and infrastructure that should not be wasted", writes Ned Crankshaw at the beginning of Creating Vibrant Public Spaces (p. 2). Moreover, their downtowns are typically walkable, mixed-use districts embodying a rich local history-just the type of place called for by smart growth and other advocates. There is a growing body of work on American small town urbanism. The National Trust for Historic Preservation's Mainstreet programme, the National Endowment for the Arts' Your Town: Citizens' Institute on Rural Design, The Carl Small Town Center at Mississippi State's School of Architecture, and others have been sponsoring projects and studies since the 1970s.
