Write almost 600 pages and then impress upon the reader how much has been left out. That's how Cor Wagenaar concludes his unparalleled work on 200 years of urban planning in the Netherlands (the term 'town planning' is hardly used. although it is in the title of the book). Countless plans and projects are still waiting to be researched and could not be included - that is what is suggested on the last page. It is a suggestion which is endearing in its modesty, all the more so, given the ambitious nature of the book. Wagenaar has set himself the task of collating and unlocking the vast body of literature on the history of urban planning in the Netherlands in the past 15 to 20 years. He writes primarily for an international audience - by far most of the literature on urban planning in the Netherlands is in Dutch.
