This is the wonderful start of a well-written, comprehensive narrative on an unusual railway history, in which Burghard Ciesla analyzes the exploitation of railways in West Berlin by the state railway of the DDR, the Deutsche Reichsbahn in SBZ (zone occupied by the Soviet armies) from 1945 until 1990. At the end of the war, the Allied forces gave the exploitation rights to the Reichsbahn for the entire Berlin railway system.
