摘要

Dr Alfred Gottwaldt, a leading railway historian and curator, died in Berlin on 16 August 2015. He was sixty-five. As head of the Railway Department at Deutsches Technikmuseum, Berlin's museum of science and industry from 1983 to 2014, Gottwaldt designed a new approach to technical exhibitions. His research shed light on the role of the Deutsche Reichsbahn in the Nazi era. His books and talks sparked interest in history as a whole, and the history of technology in particular, among readers from both academic and non-academic communities. His boyhood enthusiasm for railways and the stories behind locomotives and trains never left him.
