British imperial transport management: the Gold Coast Sekondi-Kumase railway, 1903-1911

This article focuses in a detailed way on operations and accounting procedures for the first railway of the Gold Coast from Sekondi to Kumase during the early years of the twentieth century. Although the article underscores numerous flaws and shortcomings, it also balances the picture by marking out the improvements in railway performance that were made despite the pioneering nature of the line, and also by snowing that accounting methods and the resultant statistics were not that far off the standard of other railways, including those of industrialised countries of the time.
