摘要

This is an ambitious interdisciplinary edited collection that highlights the importance of understanding the historical and cultural context of cycling and its potential contribution to sustainable development. It covers a large geographical area with 17 countries discussed at various levels of detail, either bringing together existing knowledge or presenting new information. The subject range is broad: cycle activism; urban form; infrastructural design; promotion; gender; barriers; benefits and the development of public bicycle schemes. It is of interest to both academics and students across disciplines but also several chapters will be useful to practitioners. Even those with familiar with cycling issues will find enough new insights to be satisfied. This volume builds on a process of seeing cycling in a much wider context, not simply as a mode of transport, which started with the publication of 'Cycling
