A MESSAGE OF CONGRATULATIONS ON BEHALF OF PROFESSOR NAOTAKE NODA'S RETIREMENT AND 65TH BIRTHDAY

I would like to extend my congratulations to Professor Naotake Noda on the occasion of his retirement and his 65th birthday. Having had my own roots in the Viennese school of thermal stresses, founded by the late Ernst Melan and brought into full blossom by Heinz Parkus, I became aware of the excellent papers by Professor Naotake Noda. However, as a member of the IUTAM-Bureau and later as its Secretary General, I visited Japan for the first time in the course of the preparations of the ICTAM 1996 held in Kyoto. My first and deeper personal acquaintance with Professor Noda took place on the occasion when he organized, together with Professor Richard Hetnarski, the "First International Symposium on Thermal Stresses and Related Topics" at his home University in Hamamatsu, June 5-7, 1995.
