A theoretical approach is suggested for bounding the estimation of threshold stress amplitudes of fatigue-crack growth. The approach is based on the shakedown theorems of Melan (1936) and Koiter (1960) for the lower and the upper bounds, respectively. We consider an elastic-perfectly Plastic material which undergoes fluctuating load between prescribed limits and may possess, In addition, a time-independent residual stress field.
