The information manifold: Why computers cannot solve algorithmic bias and fake news

Information is manifold. As a complex and dynamic phenomenon, information invariably inspires different interpretations and divergent perspectives transcending disciplinary boundaries. Indeed, information is so nuanced and varied that a comprehensive definition or framework is elusive. In The Information Manifold: Why Computers Can't Solve Algorithmic Bias and Fake News, the computer science scholar Antonio Badia expertly explores the multiplex nature of and multifaceted approaches to information. Badia presents an ambitious agenda attempting to address, assemble, and analyze various viewpoints of information. A critical and considered overview of information is crucial for contemporary circumstances since the abundant information we create, circulate, and consume "influence how we see the world and hence can be used to influence us" (p. 7). A fuller understanding of and appreciation for this symbiotic influence is significant since "the free flow and wise use of information are vital to the health of a modern society" (p. 314). The ultimate objective appears to be establishing a strong foundation upon which to build such a fuller understanding of information and associated issues.
