This Special Issue of the Journal of Terramechanics presents a collection of high quality papers first presented at the 9th European Conference of the International Society of Terrain Vehicle Systems (ISTVS) and chosen for their interest and relevance for a wider audience.rnThe 9th European Conference of the International Society of Terrain Vehicle Systems was held at Harper Adams University College, UK, in September 2003, with the theme of "the Design, Test and Development of Off Road Vehicles". There was some appropriateness in holding a European Conference on Off Road Vehicle Design, Testing and Development at Harper Adams because of the recent establishment of the engineering degree courses in Off Road Vehicle Design, a unique adventure within higher education in the UK and which is, at the present time, becoming increasingly established with students and employers in the off road industry.
