Energy is critical, directly or indirectly, in the entire process of evolution, growth and survival of all living beings and it plays a vital role in the socio-economic development and human welfare of a Tripura. Energy has come to be known as a strategic commodity' and any uncertainty about its supply can threaten the functioning of the economy, particularly in developing economies. Achieving energy security in this strategic sense is of fundamental importance not only to Tripura's economic growth but also for the human development objectives that aim at alleviation of poverty, unemployment and meeting the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). Holistic planning for achieving these objectives requires quality energy statistics that is able to address the issues related to energy demand, energy poverty and environmental effects of energy growth. So, energy is a vital constituent of the process of socio-economic development. It is considered as an essential infrastructural input requirement for socio-economic upliftment of rural Tripura with Geothermal energy resources. Socio-economic upliftment of rural Tripura is expected to be closely linked with such availability and use of geothermal energy for development. Energy demand is growing faster because of increasing population and rapid socio-economic reformed activities. In the prevailing situation geothermal energy sources are economically viable which make wide open the practical option for most of the developing economics. At the same time, sustainable supply of clean and affordable geothermal energy sources is required if development is to be sustainable, so that it does not cause any environmental problems. Present paper analyzes the relevance of geothermal energy sector in general and scope of geothermal sources in particular in the north eastern part of Tripura, India. The socio-economic analysis indicates a vast scope for this type of energy sources in north eastern part of India. The suitable incentives and systematic development would make geothermal energy as an attractive option with long term benefits.
