Effects of the 27 February Chile Earthquake

Panoramic view looking East close to the town of Cahuil, southern Chile. During the 8.8 magnitude earthquake on February 27,2010, structural features giving the appearance of a symmetrical graben very similar to those described in analogical models were formed. At the moment we are doing further studies to establish if this deformation is controlled by regional tectonics or local gravitational collapses. Since extensional features are widespread, at least in the northern segment of the rupture zone, we propose that north-south extension occurred during this major earthquake.
