Although the writers agree that improvements in the proposed design procedure can be made with additional analysis, testing, and field investigation of failures, the proposed design procedure, which is simply based on calculating the axial force and bending moment from basic equations of equilibrium and designing the pipe wall cross section for the combination of axial force and bending moment calculated, is a significant improvement over existing procedures and should be implemented. The current M9 thrust restraint design procedure has been shown to lead to failure of pipelines, and its continued use constitutes an unsafe practice. The proposed design procedure approach is relatively simple, provides a more accurate and rational approach to thrust restraint design of concrete pressure pipe, and should be adopted.
