Neoclassical Realism, The State, and Foreign Policy

Realism has for decades been one of the central paradigms in international politics, yet it is far from monolithic. It can be divided into two broad categories, each starting with the premise that power is of fundamental importance. The first category, under the rubric of structural realism or neorealism, seeks to explain recurring general patterns of international politics. The second seeks to explain specific national policies and includes the writings of 'classical realists' ranging from Thucydides to Hans Morgenthau.
