Fred Kaplan is a military journalist with impeccable credentials whose interest has invariably focused upon coteries of individuals exerting disproportionate influence over the character and conduct of military affairs. Kaplan's 1983 Massachusetts Institute of Technology PhD thesis in the department of political science brought to life the collection of intellectuals who came to shape nuclear strategy, a thesis which gained publication in the same year as The Wizards of Armageddon. In 2008, Kaplan published Daydream Believers, a book exploring the power of ideas such as the 'transformation in military affairs' and 'freedom' upon the direction and content of American military action. The Insurgents can thus be seen as a continuation in his examination of the trajectory of American war-fighting, a book which investigates the cultural turn, the transformation which occurred when a war gone wrong in Iraq ushered in the wholesale embrace of counter-insurgency doctrine as a way to win over the population and understand the character of a hitherto largely invisible adversary.
