摘要

For future sub-meter resolution remote sensing payloads where data rates are quite high, an efficient compression algorithm is required to bring down the volume of data produced so that the data can be effectively transmitted in a bandwidth limited channel. This paper details the design and development of state of the art compression system for future generation remote sensing satellites which works upto 1 Gbps. Consultative Committee for Space Data Systems (CCSDS) recommendation for Image Data Compression (122.0-B-1) has been implemented in hardware. The standard recommends Discrete Wavelet Transform (DWT), which performs de-correlation followed by Bit-Plane-Encoder (BPE) which performs source coding. These functional blocks consume most of the encoding time and therefore, high speed architectures like lifting for DWT, bit plane parallel, pipelining of stages for BPE are adopted for implementation. This paper presents single chip Compressor solution for space applications. The compressor core developed is ported on a Xilinx device which is commercial equivalent for space qualified RH-Virtex-5 130T in terms of performance. The device is functionally tested upto 1 Gbps and power consumption at room temperature is around 8 watts with a throughput of 100 M samples/sec. Performance evaluation is carried out and results are comparable with respect to reference CCSDS algorithm in terms of Peak Signal to Noise Ratio (PSNR)and Maximum Absolute Error(MAE).
