Saint Louis University, in conjunction with The Boeing Company, is investigating the feasibility of a wave-rider-based second stage for a two-stage-to-orbit system. This rocket-powered second stage is designed to carry 32,000 lb (14,500 kg) to orbit from a Mach 5 staging point. A wave-rider-derived shape was selected to provide increased reentry cross-range capability for more efficient operations. The process, tools, and results of an analysis of the hypersonic thermal protection system design requirements for this second stage vehicle are addressed.
