Current status of the nigerian leather industry Part 1: livestock breeds and diseases

This paper examines the current status of the Nigerian leather industry. It reviews the livestock breeds of the country upon which the production of ray hides and skins is based. The major diseases and defects affecting hides and skins in Nigeria are discussed. Also discussed in Part 2 are the potentials of hide and skin production in the country. Results of field surveys by the authors indicate that generally, not less than 96/100 of the hides and 35/100 of the skins go for human consumption.
