Understanding Data and Information Systems for Recordkeeping

The challenge that electronic information presents for the recordkeeping profession is well documented. In order for Records Managers and Archivists to cope with the identification and appraisal of records in fluid and rapidly changing electronic environments, they must, at minimum, maintain a working understanding of much of the underlying technology and its challenges and be able to understand and speak the language of IT specialists. For example, recordkeepers are expected to have a command of technical subjects such as XML schema, the implications of the differences between FAT32, HFS and ZFS, and the applicability of the MD5 hash function to their work.
