Innovative and thought-provoking, the chapters in this volume are centred on the challenges and opportunities arising from the second generation of 'digital,' and how record keepers might approach them. The first digital iteration in the 1980s and 1990s saw us grappling with the newness of digital - or electronic - records, their nature, definition, and formats. Principles and processes were adopted and adapted from those operating in a paper-based record environment, with the assumption that the record keeper would be at the centre of any new developments. Since then it has become clear that digital has changed almost everything (and not just in recordkeeping), with technology eroding many accepted practices and processes, blurring professional boundaries and generating new disciplines.
