The preservation and archiving of the many diverse forms of popular music cultures is a rich and growing body of scholarship. Recent volumes, including Preserving Popular Music Heritage' and Sites of Popular Music Heritage: Memories, Histories, Places,2 have drawn attention to the work of what Andy Bennett calls 'DIY preservationists'3 to document, preserve and widely share the heritage of popular music. This activist engagement with archival practice by community-led initiatives arises from awareness that popular music has historically been neglected in museum collections, or utilized for exhibition and interpretation but not collected. The need to document and collect these materials is particularly heightened in light of industry reports which indicate that grassroots music venues (and thus cultures) are under constant threat of closure.4 Music Preservation and Archiving Today is a valuable addition to the growing body of research around archiving music cultures.
