Plexifilm's handsome DVD of 13 Most Beautiful . . . Songs for Andy Warhol's Screen Tests is to be welcomed. Everyone knows Warhol's paintings; his films, however, remain largely unseen and are far too often assumed to be merely a put-on or incompetent. As long as so many of them remain generally unavailable, this assumption may endure. Having them languish in obscurity would be unfortunate, however—I find the best of his films to be considerably richer than even the best of his paintings. In the films, Warhol's exploration of the fascination of the image can transcend the paintings' sharp but uninflected registration of the morbidity and shallowness of mass culture and become, for all the ostentatious casualness of their mode of production, revelatory.
